Depor, who were smarting from a heavy UEFA Champions League defeat to Milan on Tuesday, got off to great start in the Basque Country when Uruguayan striker Walter Pandiani put the visitors in front after ten minutes.
Sociedad drew level when Nihat Kavheci struck two minutes before half time to make it 1-1.
However, the home side would suffer a second last minute collapse in less than a week as Aitor Lopez Rekarte put into his own net to hand Javier Irureta's side all three points.
Last Sunday, a Ronaldinho free kick in the dying stages saw Barcelona earn a very late 1-0 win over Sociedad, who would have thought they had done enough to earn a point at Camp Nou.
The result pulls Depor to within five points of leaders Real Madrid while Sociedad are needing to look over their shoulder, with the club near the Primera Liga's drop zone.
In the other match on Saturday, Espanyol earned a big win towards their hopes of staying up in the Primera Liga after a 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao at the Montjuic.
The home side took the lead three minutes in when skipper Raul Tamudo latched onto a Pierre Wome through ball and his errant cross wrong-footed Bilbao keeper Daniel Aranzubia and found the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Both sides had chances in the match, with the visitors pushing hard for an equaliser in the second half.
But the Basque club's chances were dented with 13 minutes left as Jesus Lacruz was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Fredson then went close to sealing the win for the Barcelona-based outfit but his late effort was cleared off the line.
Espanyol sealed the three points with seven minutes left when Rodriguez Maxi was pulled back in Bilbao's box by Luis Prieto for a penalty.
Prieto was shown a red card for serious foul play before Tamudo stepped up to score his second goal from spot.
However with nine men, Bilbao got a consolation goal in bizarre circumstances when substitute Santiago Ezquerro's shot took a wicked deflection off Espanyol defender Mauricio Pochettino before looping past goalkeeper Erwin Lemmens for 2-1.
The result takes Espanyol to within two points of safety while Bilbao miss the chance to solidify a European place in the table.
