Bernard Diomede has expressed his wish to play in the Spanish La Liga.
The former Liverpool player impressed Espanyol coach Miguel Angel Lotina when he scored in a friendly whilst on trial at the Spanish club.
However, Lotina wanted Diomede to stay a little longer whilst he dwelt on his decision. The French World Cup winner refused, stating he had other offers to consider.
Diomede told L'Equipe: "Lotina wanted to see if I am fit and I think I have shown him I am fine. In my mind everything went off smoothly.
"I decided to come back to France because even if Espanyol remains a priority to me, I could not take the risk to get injured - I have other contacts but in case of trouble I have nothing left.
"I felt the Spanish officials were disappointed I decided to leave. We will take stock on Sunday."
Spain though, is Diomede's preferred destination.
The 30-year old winger explained: "I knew great happiness in France with Auxerre. I have discovered the English game at Liverpool.
"Now I am attracted by Spain. I asked my agent Pierre Frelot to favour that destination since June."
