Espanyol hammer Haifa

Espanyol moved into the last eight of the Uefa Cup after a 4-0 thrashing of Maccabi Haifa.

A second-half blitz took Espanyol into the last eight of the Uefa Cup after a 4-0 thrashing of Maccabi Haifa.

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, the last 16 encounter was set up for a tense return at the Montjuic and so it proved in the first half.

But after a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Espanyol cut loose in the second period and scored three times in the space of eight minutes.

The deadlock was broken on 53 minutes when Ivan de la Pena struck from outside the area for his first European goal of the season.

The lead was doubled six minutes later when Walter Pandiani slipped a pass in for Raul Tamudo, who finished from the right side of the area.

And just two minutes later it was 3-0 as de la Pena delivered a ball in from the right and Luis Garcia converted from close range.

The rout was completed in the third minute of injury-time when Pandiani scored his ninth goal in the competition with a low effort from inside the box.
