Sergio Gonzalez has revealed his delight at being called into the national squad.
Sergio Gonzalez has revealed that he is delighted to be back in the Spanish squad after two years without a call-up.
The midfielder also admitted that he almost gave up hope of returning to the national fold.
Gonzalez has made 10 appearances for his country, but this is the first time that coach Luis Aragones has named him in one of his squads since he took over in 2004.
Now the Deportivo La Coruna man is back in contention for next week's friendly with Canada and he could not be happier.
"I am like a child with new shoes," Sergio beamed. "It has been a long time since I felt like this and it is great to have it again.
"I kept an eye on what was going on with the national squad, but as I was not being named I began to feel that it was not going to happen.
"There was some speculation the day before, but I did not want to even think about it so when I was told the news I was obviously delighted."
Gonzalez is now determined to stay in the international setup, and has told Aragones that he will not let him down.
"It is the first time that the current coach has called me up and I am going to show him that he can count on me and that he was not wrong to do so."
