Espanyol head coach admits talks have been held with Benfica

Espanyol head coach Bartolome Marquez 'would not be surprised' if Luis Garcia left the club for Benfica this summer. Garcia has been strongly linked with a transfer away from the Primera Divison side, with Benfica and Tottenham Hotspur both mooted as interested parties. Spurs boss Juande Ramos has since denied that he is set to swoop for the striker, however speculation linking Benfica with a move has continued to linger. Marquez has now confirmed that talks have been held between Espanyol and the Portuguese giants, although he admits the striking of a deal is some way off.

Meeting

"The stories are there, but I don't pay them any attention because my job is to coach. Everything else is down to the sporting director, Paco Herrera," he told the club's official website. "However, it wouldn't be a surprise if he left because when people are talking about these things it's because there's something in them, although nobody has said anything to me. "I know there was a meeting, but the positions (of the two clubs) were very different, but I'm not going to focus on this matter." On Wednesday Herrera revealed that talks had been held with Benfica, but added: "There is nothing advanced."
