The Turin outfit are currently third in the table and are well placed for a return to Italy's top-flight and they have targeted the Argentine striker as a possible major signing to boost their hopes of re-establishing themselves in Serie A.
The 27-year-old hit-man has failed to adapt to the rigours of La Liga since his surprise move to Villarreal in Janauary and he has come in for criticism from the media and some of the club's fans for some abject performances.
It was something of a surprise when the Argentine international moved to unfashionable Villarreal from Boca Juniors for £12 million as it was expected that the highly-rated forward would move to one of the big clubs across Europe.
Boca still own half of the player's contract and Torino have reportedly approached the World Club champions about buying the rest of his contract and registering the player for them.
Villarreal having spent a record sum on Palermo and signed him on a four-and-a-half year contract will be keen to hang onto him, but the player may decide to ask for a move after failing to settle in Spain.
Torino have big aspirations if they do get win promotion back to Serie A and Palermo is one of a number of big signings planned at the Stadio Deli Alpi.
