The 30-year-old defender has damaged cartilage in his right knee and now looks set for an extended spell on the sidelines.
Alvarez will have one final test in Barcelona on Thursday to determine definitively whether he needs an operation.
"Alvarez has a fracture in his right knee which normally requires surgery," stated Villarreal doctor Juan Albors.
"It usually means six to eight weeks out of action."
However, the stopper is determined to see specialist Enrique Cugat before committing himself to the operation as he still believes there is a chance he can play on with the injury even though it is causing him discomfort.
