Pellegrini fumes at players

Manuel Pellegrini has laid into Villarreal following their Intertoto Cup exit.

Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini has laid into his side following their Intertoto Cup exit at the hands of Slovenian side NK Maribor.

The Spanish side's hopes of European football were dashed on Saturday as they could only manage a 1-1 draw in Slovenia, having been beaten 2-1 in the first leg.

Villarreal did not aid their cause by finishing the first leg with ten men, while they had three players dismissed as they lost their heads in Slovenia.

Pellegrini felt his players were the architects of their own downfall against a side who showed real passion.

"We are out because we played with fewer players in both encounters and because our rivals were very motivated. They were deserved winners," Pellegrini said.

"You cannot afford to have four players sent off in two games. I am really annoyed.

"The image of my players in the final few minutes has left me frustrated and unhappy."

Diego Forlan, Alessio Tacchinardi and Gonzalo Rodriguez all saw red and Pellegrini added: "It was pathetic and very bad to finish the game with eight players on the field."
