Cristiano Doni has explained the reasons behind his sudden decision to leave Mallorca.
Cristiano Doni has moved to try explain the reasons behind his sudden request to leave Mallorca.
The Italian agreed a one-year contract extension with the Islanders in July after initially joining from Sampdoria during last season's January transfer window.
However, he has now had a change of heart and has asked the club to allow him to leave and take up an offer from former club Atalanta.
He has cited a desire to be closer to his family as the reason behind his decision and insists it is nothing to do with money.
"In life you have priorities," he stated. "It is not about money.
"I will suffer. I will lose money, but it is a priority.
"If the club (Mallorca) don't understand then I will stay."
Meanwhile, Atalanta - who will be back in Serie A this season - are close to finalising a deal for another old boy, Christian Vieri.
The veteran striker seemed set to hang up his boots after suddenly opting to annul the deal he signed with Sampdoria earlier in the summer.
But he is understood to have held talks with Atalanta president Ivan Ruggeri in recent days and the Bergamo-based club are hopeful of concluding a deal for the 33-year-old.
