Assuncao saves Betis

Real Betis drew 2-2 at Gramenet in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter final.

A late Marcos Assuncao strike earned Real Betis a 2-2 draw at Gramenet in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter final.

Gramenet, who disposed of Barcelona and Levante in previous rounds, had looked set for a famous victory, but were denied by a trademark free-kick from the Brazilian five minutes from time.

Betis had started the stronger and took the lead on the quarter-hour mark through Fernando after neat work from Assuncao and Edu.

However, Gramenet got back on terms - albeit in fortuitous circumstances - when Juanito got a clearance all wrong and ended up lobbing the ball over his own keeper Pedro Contreras for an own-goal.

The equaliser lifted the hosts, and they hit the front seven minutes into the second half when Oscar Olles finished at the far post.

However, with victory within reach, Assuncao stepped up to fire home from 25 yards and spare the Primera outfit's blushes.

Betis will now be favourites to progress to the semi-finals in next week's second leg.
