Celta Vigo's star performer broke his ankle in their 1-0 defeat of Real Mallorca on Saturday. Berizzo was involved in a collision with Mallorcan striker Alberto Luque in the fifth minute and landed badly.
The 32-year-old, who was a stalwart at River Plate before moving to Europe with Marseille, now seems likely to miss the 2002 finals in Japan/Korea.
Speaking to Onda Cero, club doctor Mario Galan said: "He was hit in the air and fell very badly.
"Unfortunately the injury is almost certain to put him out for the rest of the season and for the World Cup, as it will take between four and five months for him to recover.
"He will now be operated on as soon as possible. He is obviously devastated by what has happened."
