Celta Vigo and Eintracht Frankfurt both earned their first points as Newcastle took control of Group H.
The Magpies will be ultra-confident of reaching the knockout stages of the Uefa Cup after Albert Luque's goal gave them a fine 1-0 win over Palermo.
The Italians remain in second place with three points, but Celta and their German opponents are two points behind following a 1-1 draw in Vigo.
It was the home side who took the lead in Spain when Jesus Perera nodded in from close range after 11 minutes.
However Eintracht hit back almost immediately when Alexander Huber headed home from a Sotirios Kyrgiakos cross.
The Bundesliga side ended the game with ten men when Alexander Meier was shown a second yellow card on 59 minutes, but held on for the draw.
