Bayer Leverkusen are closing in on Strasbourg's Tunisian defender Karim Hagui.
Bayer Leverkusen are closing in on Strasbourg's Tunisian international Karim Hagui, the Bundesliga side confirmed on Saturday.
The 22-year-old defender, who represented his country at the World Cup finals, is ranked in the é¼2 million (£1.4 million) bracket and has been lined up to replace the departing German international centre back Jens Nowotny.
Rennes had also been linked with the stopper after Strasbourg's relegation, but Leverkusen supremo Wolfgang Holzhauser is confident of snaring the player - and hinted that the youngster will commit himself to the BayArena outfit until 2009.
"The details are all set and the deal will be signed at the beginning of the next week," declared Holzhauser.
Nowotny, who ended his 10-year spell with the Uefa Cup qualifiers this summer, looks set to continue his career abroad, with Spanish outfit Levante and Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg two known admirers of the experienced 32-year-old.
