Making their bow in Europe's elite club competition the Basque outfit struggled to break down their Greek opponents, but eventually came out on top courtesy of a late Darko Kovacevic penalty.
Denoueix pinpointed the second-half arrival of Turkish star Nihat Kahveci as the turning point in the match, and admitted his side had seemed nervous for long periods.
"It was very congested in the first half and we attacked with fear, the side was timid and we had to try other things which fortunately we could in the second half," explained Denoueix.
"He (Nihat) gave a lot of vitality and strength to the team that we are going to need both in La Liga and the Champions League."
Denoueix refused to comment on why he did not select Javier de Pedro for the game, but intriguingly confirmed the Spanish international winger - a summer target for Southampton - had been omitted for non-sporting reasons.
