Oleg Protasov's team gifted Sociedad the lead on 31 minutes when a failed offside trap allowed Igor Gabilondo in on goal down the left hand side.
The wide man, only in the team as a late replacement for the injured Javier De Pedro, beat Theofanis Katergiannakis to the ball and rolled it past the onrushing keeper into an empty net.
The Spanish side could have been ahead earlier as they attacked the home team on the break.
Nihat could have put the Spanish side in front earlier on but he headed straight at Katergiannakis from Valeri Karpin's cross and was then denied again by the custodian when he saved a low shot with his shin.
Olympiakos came into the game after going a goal down and Giorgios Georgiadis was denied when Sander Westerveld acrobatically tipped wide his shot from the edge of the area.
The second half saw the hosts start in search of an equaliser and they managed to get on level terms when Ieroklis Stoltidis fired in a low free kick that Westerveld let slip underneath his hands.
Sociedad's night soon got even worse as forward Darko Kovacevic saw red for two deliberate handball offences.
Olympiakos soon made the man advantage tell as they went in front through Neri Castillo. The striker beat Westerveld to a through ball and went round the Dutch custodian to slot home into an unguarded net.
The goal stung Raynald Denoueix's side into action and they managed an equaliser from an unlikely source when Argentinian defender Gabriel Schurrer volleyed in Agustin Aranzabal's left wing cross to make it 2-2.
Despite pushing forward in numbers Olympiakos failed to create a good opportunity to get the goal they needed to keep their qualification hopes alive.
