The 34-year-old Russian has been instrumental in the turnaround of Sociedad's league fortunes with the Basque club having won their last three Primera encounters on the trot.
The midfielder's current deal at the Anoeta expires at the end of the campaign, and Karpin has an option to extend it for a further 12 months if he plays just another three Liga games.
However, the former Celta Vigo star plans to hang up his boots come June, but has conceded that he could still change his mind.
"At this point I am still thinking that I will retire at the end of the season, but by May or June you don't know what will happen," he stated.
"The decision is not a physical question, but more a mental one.
"If I am not 100 percent right to keep playing I will not continue because I don't want to cheat anyone, especially not Real (Sociedad).
"What's more, the body does not recover like it used to a few years ago.
"I will speak to the club in May or June and we will see what I am doing.
"I'm certain I'm not going to spend another year earning money if I am not 100 percent right."
