AC Milan have confirmed the dismissal of Sinisa Mihajlovic, replacing him with youth coach Cristian Brocchi.

Owner Silvio Berlusconi invited Brocchi to dinner on Monday night to offer him the job, while CEO Adriano Galliani called Mihajlovic and dismissed him.

The 47-year-old Serbian took to social media on Monday night, thanking the fans for their support, calling his spell in the hot-seat "an honour".

Brocchi will take over initially until the end of June.

A club statement read: "We would like to thank Mihajlovic for the dedication and hard work carried out this season.

"Cristian Brocchi will now be in charge of the first team until the end of the season. Milan would like to welcome Mr Brocchi and wish him all the best."

Mihajlovic oversaw Milan's 3-0 win over rivals Inter in the second derby of the season in January, but that was a rare highlight in a difficult campaign; they are seven points adrift of a European position with six matches to play.

Berlusconi had previously suggested Mihajlovic's fate would depend on the outcome of the Coppa Italia final against Juventus on May 21 - a match which may now be the club's best hope of playing in Europe next season.
