Viola beat the drop; Roma remain in Euro hunt

Fiorentina preserved their Serie A status on Saturday, while Roma remain within touching distance of the European places. Fiorentina put a nightmare week behind them with a 1-0 victory at Lecce to book their place in the Italian top flight for next season. Alessio Cerci put the Viola in front in the 35th minute and it proved enough despite both sides hitting the post before the finish. Adem Ljajic was left out of the Viola side days after he was attacked by Delio Rossi during Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Novara, an incident that saw Rossi sacked hours afterwards. Fiorentina were led by team manager Vincenzo Guerini, who coached his first Serie A game in 14 years. The result means Lecce could be relegated on Sunday if Genoa get at least a point at Udinese.

Roma captain Francesco Totti scored twice and missed a penalty to deny former team-mate and coach Vincenzo Montella victory on his return to the Stadio Olimpico in a 2-2 draw with Catania. Totti missed an early penalty but had Roma in front early in the second half before goals from Francesco Lodi and Giovanni Marchese turned the game on its head. But Totti's second with 13 minutes left at least salvaged a point to keep them in touch with the Europa League places despite a five-match winless run.
