With the pressure already mounting on coach Giovanni Trapattoni, it was important that the Azzurri put on a show for their fans.
However things got off to a bad start for Italy when Emre, who plies his trade in Serie A, grabbed an opening goal for the visitors after 28 minutes.
The Italians got back on level terms seven minutes before the break when Christian Vieri, a club-mate of Emre, took an opportunity with aplomb.
Trapattoni had insisted that the outcome of the match would not affect his tenure as coach - and indeed played an experimental side with four new caps in the starting line-up.
But being held at home - even by the World Cup bronze medallists, will not be appreciated by the media.
Turkey, meanwhile, are a tricky proposition, and England will be aware their work is cut out for them to overhaul them in their Euro 2004 qualification group.
