Francesco Totti's strike from the penalty spot was the difference in the end, though Modena were unlucky not to earn a draw in The Eternal City, with a glorious chance in the dying stages.
The turning point of the match came after seven minutes, when Totti (pictured) was brought down just inside the box by Modena's Jacopo Balestri.
From the spot, the Azzurri striker beat Modena goalkeeper Marco Ballotta for the only goal of the match.
Moments later, John Carew was unlucky not to double the home side's lead after breaking through and getting around Ballotta before trying to finish but Matteo Pivotto was able to clear off the line to keep it 1-0.
In the second half, the visitors nearly equalised but Nicola Amoruso's looping header was brilliantly saved by Roma goalkeeper Ivan Pelizzoli, as Fabio Capello's men held on to go three points clear of Milan at the top of the table.
Juventus picked up where they left off against Olympiakos in midweek after thrashing Parma 4-0 at the Stadio Della Alpi.
Juve ended their three-match run in style on Wednesday beating Olympiakos 7-0 in the UEFA Champions League.
The hero on that night Fabrizio Miccoli continued his fine run of form, opening the scoring after just seven minutes.
He added a second just after the half hour mark to put Marcello Lippi's side in complete control.
Alessandro Del Piero scored within minutes of coming on in the second half, like he did against the Greeks, before Pavel Nedved completed the rout with a fourth.
Internazionale remain just a point behind Juve after a 2-0 away victory over Bologna.
First half goals from Obafemi Martins and Alvero Recoba were enough to pinch a hard-fought win.
Elsewhere, Fabio Liverani's solitary strike lifted Lazio over Ancona while Reggina and Chievo split the points in a goalless draw.
Brescia secured just their second win of the season after beating Empoli 2-0.
Two goals in the space of just five first half minutes from Stefano Mauri and Luigi Di Biagio were enough to claim the points.
