Milan were already leading courtesy of Clarence Seedorf's second minute strike when goalkeeper Dida was sent off for a professional foul.
Cristiano Lucarelli converted from the spot, past substitute keeper Christian Abbiati, silencing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
Seedorf put Milan back ahead two minutes after half time, but Lucarelli was on hand to grab an equaliser and cause the first shock of the fledgling Serie A season.
Internazionale started the Serie A season with a 2-2 draw against Chievo.
The Italian curtain raiser saw Roberto Mancini take his new look side to Verona, against a Chievo side that were experiencing life beyond Luigi Delneri, the coach that made them a force in Serie A.
Inter had made a fine start when Dejan Stankovic opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark, but Chievo levelled things up through Franco Semioli.
Sergio Pellissier gave the Verona-based side the lead on 36, but Adriano struck after the break to level matters.
Chievo were put under pressure at the end, and indulged in a little time-wasting as the final whistle approached, but they hung on for a fine draw against the Milan giants.
