Roma almost blew a three goal lead on Wednesday, eventually running out as 3-2 winners over Internazionale.
A keenly contested encounter saw Francesco Totti and Juan Veron both receive their marching orders after being involved in a late scuffle.
Roma opened the scoring through Vincenzo Montella (12) before Totti doubled the lead with a cheeky chip on the half hour mark.
The Giallorossi skipper looked to have sealed the victory when he converted from the spot (47) after Montella went down under minimal contact from Marco Matterazi but Inter substitute Adriano (67, 77) ensured a grandstand finish with a second half brace.
Leaders Juventus saw off Sampdoria 2-0 thanks to goals from David Trezeguet (41) and Adrian Mutu (57), making history in the process by winning the first nine games of the season.
Ascoli and Udinese shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Michele Fini (18) and Jose Luis Vidigal (88) providing the goals, while Cagliari and Livorno also drew one apiece with the goals coming from a David Suazo penalty (51) and Matteo Melara (75).
Milan came from behind to defeat Empoli. Igli Vannucchi (34) gave the home side a shock lead before goals from Alberto Gilardino (45, 50) and Christian Vieri (56) secured a comfortable Rossoneri win.
Lazio needed a last-gasp penalty from Massimo Oddo (91) to secure a 2-2 draw with Chievo. Tommaso Rocchi put Lazio ahead before goals from Lorenzo D'Anna and Sergio Pellisier looked to have given the visitors three points.
Palermo hammered Lecce 3-0 with Massimo Bonanni, Massimo Mutarelli and Michele Ferri all getting on the scoresheet.
Parma had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Messina - Fabio Simplicio and Zlatan Muslimovic providing the goals, while Gianluca Toni (2, 68) continued his purple patch as Fiorentina beat Siena 2-0.
