Italian champions Juventus were held to a 2-2 draw at Messina, in a contest that also saw a red card for defender Fabio Cannavaro.
With Juve cruising at the top of Serie A changes were made ahead of midweek European action, in a decision they were left to rue in only the third minute when Sergio Floccari ran through the Old Lady's backline to register for Messina.
Juve responded in some style and celebrated a leveller on 18 minutes when Zlatan Ibrahimovic finished a fine team move with a clinical finish.
The second period was an entertaining contest that saw Cannavoro sent off for a second bookable offence, before, ten minutes from time, substitute Adrian Mutu scored from the penalty spot to give Juve the lead.
It would, however, prove short lived as Floccari completed a fine personal appearance with his second goal - a header from a setpiece with just five minutes remaining.
Chasing Milan needed a 23rd minute penalty from Alberto Gilardino to see off relegation threatened Cagliari.
Gilardino dispatched from the spot after strike partner Filippo Inzaghi had been pulled down by Francesco Bega.
Internazionale remain toothless, as they failed to find the target in a 0-0 stalemate on their travels to Livorno.
