Serie A round-up

Roma opened the new Serie A season with a 2-0 victory over Livorno.

Roma opened the new Serie A season with a 2-0 victory over Livorno, before Internazionale edged out Fiorentina in a thrilling evening match.

Following the Azzurri's World Cup triumph in July the Italian summer has been shrouded in uncertainty, with the league season delayed as a result of the match-fixing scandal which ultimately resulted in Juventus' relegation to Serie B.

Luciano Spalletti's Roma have been tipped as potential champions this term and they got off the mark in style, with goals from Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Mancini securing a comfortable win.

Livorno resisted stubbornly in the opening 45 minutes, but De Rossi managed to break the deadlock on the stroke of half time.

Brazilian star Alessandro Mancini then doubled Roma's lead on 54 minutes to sew up the three points.

Inter also began their campaign with victory, 3-2 over Fiorentina, but only after surviving a late scare at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Esteban Cambiasso scored twice in the first half (11 and 42) to put the Nerazzurri on course for a comfortable win, and then Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted in his first competitive game for the club (61).

However, they were left hanging on as Luca Toni picked up where he left off last season with two late goals (68 and 79).
