Portuguese legend Luis Figo has confirmed that he plans to end his top level career.
Portuguese legend Luis Figo has confirmed that he plans to end his top level career when his current contract with Internazionale expires at the end of the season.The former Real Madrid and Barcelona favourite called time on his international career after the 2006 World Cup having worn his country's colours with distinction 127 times.
His impressive displays in Germany provided a fitting end to his time on the international stage and with Inter topping the Serie A table, it seems likely he will close his domestic days on a similar high.
"My top level career will end in Italy," said Figo. "That was my intention when I arrived in Italy two years ago. It's my decision.
"I decided a long time ago not to come back to play in Portugal.
"I stayed in Italy until the end of the season to win the championship and quit top level football at the level I decided. That's why I didn't leave in January."
Figo is not, though, ready to hang up the most illustrious of boots entirely and it is expected that he will join Saudi team Al Ittihad at the end of the season.
However, Figo insists that despite the declarations of Al Ittihad president Mansour al Balwi to the contrary, he has not given them a definitive answer on where his future lies.
"I'm waiting to see if I go or not. Any decision has to be taken carefully and thoughtfully," he added.
