Francesco Totti celebrates his 40th birthday on Tuesday - but the Roma legend wasn't the only football superstar born in 1976.

Long after many of his contemporaries have retired, the Italian is still going strong in Serie A, with two goals in four league games so far this season for the capital club.

Goalkeeper - Shay Given

In goal is former Newcastle, Manchester City and Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given. The Republic of Ireland international - who won 134 caps for his country - is still playing for Stoke City in the Premier League.

Decorated defenders make up the backline. Edmilson was a Champions League winner with Barcelona and played a key role in Brazil's 2002 World Cup win. Nesta twice won Europe's premier club competition before helping Italy to international football's top prize in 2006. And former Argentina captain Juan Pablo Sorin lifted the Copa Libertadores with River Plate.

The year 1976 saw a raft of talented midfielders born, including four-time Champions League medallist Clarence Seedorf, Bundesliga giant Michael Ballack and World Cup-winning duo Francesco Totti and Gilberto Silva (who also achieved Invincibles fame with Arsenal).

Patrick Kluivert, Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy terrified defences in their prime. Dutch pair Kluivert and Van Nistelrooy are among the most prolific forwards the country has produced, while two-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo is one of the finest strikers of any era - and a two-time World Cup winner with Brazil.
