Europa League: Shakhtar hit five and Zenit avoid shock Dundalk loss

Shakhtar Donetsk maintained their 100 per cent start to Europa League Group H as they thrashed Gent 5-0.

Viktor Kovalenko set the Ukrainians on their way after 13 minutes, with Facundo Ferreyra (30), Bernard (46), Taison (75) and Maksym Malyshev (85) completing the rout.

In Group D, League of Ireland Premier Division side Dundalk lost 2-1 at home to Zenit St Petersburg, who also missed a last-minute penalty.

The Russians have a five-point lead while Dundalk are second, a point ahead of Maccabi Tel-Aviv after the Israeli side secured a 2-1 away win at AZ Alkmaar with a late goal from Eyal Golasa.

Austria Vienna battled to a 3-3 draw at Roma, leaving both teams level on five points at the top of Group E.

Stephan El Shaarawy scored twice for the Italians, but late goals from Dominik Prokop and Olarenwaju Kayode secured a dramatic draw.

And, in Group F, Genk beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 at home to move two points clear after Rapid Vienna and Sassuolo played out a 1-1 draw.

Schalke have three wins from three in Group I after an early goal from Ukraine forward Yevhen Konoplyanka proved enough to give the Germans a 1-0 away win over Russian side Krasnodar.

And Fiorentina stayed top of Group J with a 3-1 win away at Slovan Liberec.

Nikola Kalinic scored twice in the first half and, although Petr Sevcik (58) reduced the deficit for the hosts, Khouma Babacar made sure the points went back to Italy with a third goal 20 minutes from time.

What we learned from Utd's Europa League win

Sparta Prague are top of Group K after a second-half goal from substitute Matej Pulkrab (71) gave the Czechs a 1-0 win away to Israeli side Hapoel Be'er Sheva, while Villarreal are at the summit of Group L after battling to a 2-2 draw away at Turkish side Osmanlispor.

A first-half brace from Raul Rusescu put the hosts in control before Villarreal midfielder Bruno Soriano missed a penalty on 54 minutes after Osmanlispor substitute Mehmet Guven had been sent off.

The Spaniards, though, reduced the arrears through Alfred N'Diaye (56) and then Alexandre Pato netted the equaliser with 16 minutes left.

Celta Vigo and Ajax shared four goals in an entertaining 2-2 draw to keep themselves at the head of Group G.

The Dutch side took the lead through Hakim Ziyech on 22 minutes, only for a fortunate bobble off captain Andreu Fontas to see Celta level.

Winger Amin Younes fired Ajax back into the lead on 71 minutes only for a similarly impressive finish from substitute Fabian Orellana to draw the Spaniards level again in the 82nd minute.

Elsewhere in the early kick-offs saw Nice win 1-0 at Red Bull Salzburg and FK Qarabag beat PAOK Salonika 2-0, while there were draws in Konyaspor vs Braga, Standard Liege vs Panathinaikos and FC Zurich vs Steaua Bucuresti.

In the later matches there were wins for Young Boys over Apoel NicosiaFeyenoord over Zorya LuganskSt Etienne over GabalaOlympiakos over Astana and Astra Giurgiu at PlzenMainz and Anderlecht drew 1-1.
