The Giallorossi supremo claimed he wished his coach would depart for Real Madrid in what seemed like the culmination of a stormy relationship between the duo.
However, Sensi has now insisted he was being sarcastic in a bid to lead the press a merry dance.
"Capello will be Roma's coach for the next two seasons," he stressed. "And he will be so because I confirmed him."
Capello is thought to be fuming with the situation, and is unlikely to be placated by the president's decision to joke about his future.
The relations between the pair seem stretched to breaking point, and it would take a brave man to bet on Capello still being in charge for the next two years.
Sensi also denied agreeing a deal to buy Bayer Leverkusen defender Lucio.
