A slow first half was illuminated by Roberto Muzzi's (pictured) goal ten minutes before the break as the hosts made their pressure tell.
Unsettled star Dejan Stankovic put his situation to the back of his mind for the evening and made it 2-0 just after the hour mark to put Roberto Mancini's men well in charge of the tie.
Benito Carbone could have put a different slant on matters straight after the goal but he was denied by an excellent Matteo Sereni save and Lazio held on to give themselves a superb chance of making the last four as they travel to Parma for the second leg.
Milan hold a slender advantage from their home leg of the quarter final against Roma, as an injury time goal from Massimo Ambrosini gave them a 2-1 lead to take to Rome.
Jon Dahl Tomasson gave the hosts the lead six minutes before half time as Carlo Ancelotti's men bossed the opening 45 minutes but were unable to add to their advantage.
They were made to pay for that in the second period as Roma came back into the match and grabbed a deserved equaliser on 78 minutes through Norwegian marksman John Carew.
With time ticking away a draw looked the likely result until Ambrosini struck in the 91st minute to deal a cruel blow to Roma.
The tie is still evenly poised for the return leg in the Eternal City however, and the Stadio Olimpico clash promises to be an exciting affair.
