Op blow for Chivu

Roma defender Cristian Chivu is likely to be sidelined for at least a month after undergoing foot surgery.

The Romanian international broke a bone in his foot during a game of beach football this summer.

He was initially told that a period of inactivity would cure the metatarsal problem and his foot was placed in a protective cast.

However, the foot has not healed as expected and it was decided that he should undergo surgery.

The operation is almost certain to rule Chivu out of the start of the Serie A season as well as a couple of World Cup qualifiers with Romania.
