Adrian Mutu could be offloaded by Juventus in the summer.Adrian Mutu's convoluted story looks set to take another twist - with the Italian media suggesting that the Romanian could be used as a makeweight in the deal to sign Roma's Antonio Cassano.
Since being sacked by Chelsea after failing a drugs test Mutu has returned to Italian football - annoying The Blues in the process.
The striker wanted to move to Juventus - but then found himself in limbo because of the rules on non-EU players at the club.
Livorno helped out by signing the player, and the subsequent loaning out of Igor Tudor has now allowed Mutu to move to Turin.
However, there are now suggestions that Juventus may play him for only a handful of games at the end of the season when his ban ends, before selling him on as part of a deal to snap up Roma's Cassano.
Cassano is expected to leave the club to ease the financial burden on the Giallorossi, but the prospect of signing Mutu in return may well appeal to the capital club.
The deal has been suggested by Livorno president Also Spinelli, as he discussed the convoluted story so far.
"Mutu has been a favour in exchange from another player from Juve," explained Spinelli.
"I had an extra non-EU place free so I didn't see why I shouldn't help out Juve.
"Anyway - it could be that Mutu ends up going to Roma."
Mutu qualifies for two league matches and, potentially, the UEFA Champions League final when his drug ban ends later this season.
