Roma midfielder Damiano Tommasi has spoken with both relief and delight.Roma midfielder Damiano Tommasi has spoken with both relief and delight at having returned to first team action with a goal against Fiorentina.
Tommasi has endured a nightmare time with injuries over the past couple of seasons, with the root of the problem being serious ligament damage suffered against Stoke in a friendly in 2004.
The combative midfielder had feared for his future but on Sunday, against Fiorentina on his return, he netted after just two minutes in a game that eventually ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
''After the goal I was really happy because we were really keen on this match,'' Tommasi told Sky Italia. ''I was happy also because I saw my team-mates happy for me.
"I've not the habit to score, but I'm satisfied. Obviously this score has a special taste because it's arrived in the day of my official return as a regular player.
''Who do I thank? I would have to thank a lot of people, but especially I thank my wife, who supported me in difficult moments.
''I've had emotion when the coach told me I would play from the beginning, this morning.
''I've played in a not usual role for me and this means the coach has faith in me and that what I'm doing on training session pays.''
Remarkably, Tommasi will earn just é¼15,000 this season - the lowest amount possible in Italian football - with the figure having been set by the player himself as he looks to prove his worth to those who had doubted he would make a return.
