Roma's hopes lie in the balance after defeat, whilst Basel are on the brink of qualification.Roma's Uefa Cup challenge has been left hanging in the balance after a 3-1 loss to Crvena Zvezda, whilst Basel triumphed over Tromso in a seven goal thriller to be on the brink of qualification.
The Serie A side travelled to Serbia & Montenegro in second place in Group E behind qualified Strasbourg, but now need a win against Basel in their final fixture to guarantee their place in the knock-out stages.
Luciano Spalletti's side started in a positive fashion as Shabani Nonda converted a cross from wantaway star Antonio Cassano on 23 minutes.
However just quarter of an hour later they surrendered their lead when Nikola Zigic fired home from Bosko Jankovic's pass.
Further torment was to come for the Serie A side as Milan Purovic struck from outside the area (77) and Zigic grabbed his second in the final minutes - and their ordeal was not complete until Cassano missed a penalty in injury time.
Basel meanwhile scored three times in the last half hour to come from two goals down in their home win over Norwegian outfit Tromso.
The Swiss side were behind early on as Lars Strand headed in after two minutes, but they soon restored parity as Mladen Petric smashed home Boris Smiljanic's headed pass on 17 minutes.
However Tromso hit back straight away through Ole Aarst, and further extended their lead when Strand grabbed his second by converting a cross from Aarst.
The home side never gave up the chase however, and restored hope when Argentinian midfielder Matias Delgado scored just after the hour mark.
Australian star Scott Chipperfield headed them level just eight minutes later, and the comeback was complete when David Degen netted from close range on 75 minutes to dump Tromso out of the competition.
