Roma equalled a Serie A record after edging a win over Empoli, while Lazio surprised Fiorentina.
Simone Perrotta's 16th minute goal was enough to see off struggling Empoli and hand Roma their 10th consecutive victory in the league.
And, coupled with Fiorentina's defeat, the success lifts Roma into fourth in the table and into a UEFA Champions League berth.
Fiorentina's season continues to stutter after they were beaten 2-1 at home by Lazio.
Valon Behrami and Tommaso Rocchi did the damage for Lazio, while substitute Valeri Bojinov netted a consolation for the Viola.
Chievo Verona and Palermo both hold European pretensions, but they had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Treviso have slipped back to the foot of the Serie A table after crashing to a 1-0 defeat at home to Parma, who scored on 14 minutes through Fabio Simplicio.
Lecce, who had been bottom, trade places with Treviso after drawing 0-0 at home to Reggina.
Ascoli secured a late 2-1 success on their travels to Sampdoria, who finished the game with 10 men.
Fabio Quagliarella put Ascoli ahead on 56 minutes, only for Samp to level on 71 minutes through Sergio Volpi.
Just four minutes later, Samp had Francesco Flachi sent off and Ascoli substitute Igor Budan poached a winner five minutes from time.
Udinese were another team to lose 2-1 at home, and end a game with 10 men, after slipping up against Siena.
Rey Volpato's double, either side of a Vincenzo Iaquinta penalty, earned Siena the spoils, while Vincent Candela was dismissed in injury time.
