Fiorentina will spend the international break atop the Serie A standings after an impressive victory at Sampdoria on Sunday.

Paulo Sousa's men secured their third straight league victory thanks to a 2-0 win at the Stadio Luigi Ferrari, where Josip Ilicic's penalty and a Nikola Kalinic strike proved the difference.

But they are only top of the standings on goal difference, with Inter Milan also on 27 points after claiming their third successive 1-0 win as Geoffrey Kondogbia's first goal for the club saw off hosts Torino.

Roma are a point back in third after winning the first capital city derby of the season, with Edin Dzeko and Gervinho striking either side of half-time as Lazio were overcome 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Reigning champions Juventus came from behind to beat Empoli 3-1 and record their first win on the road since September 20.

Massimo Maccarone put Empoli ahead in the 19th minute, but Mario Mandzukic equalised before Patrice Evra and substitute Paulo Dybala wrapped up Juve's fifth league win of the campaign, lifting them to seventh spot.

Gonzalo Higuain's ninth league goal of the season saw Napoli beat Udinese 1-0 at San Paolo, and a first-half Nicola Sansone strike handed Sassuolo victory by the same scoreline at home to struggling Carpi. They are joined in the drop zone by Verona and Frosinone.

Frosinone were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Genoa, despite playing over half the match with a man advantage.

Leonardo Pavoletti had given the visitors an early lead, but Leonard Blanchard and Mobido Diakite turned the match on its head before Genoa had Sebastian De Maio sent off.

The 36th-minute red card did not prove fatal, though, as substitute Serge Gakpe struck with a close-range shot to earn Genoa a third successive draw.

Elsewhere, Alberto Gilardino's header saw Palermo halt a five-match winless streak and triumph 1-0 at home to Chievo.
