Lazio have made an enquiry regarding Atalanta stopper Cesare Natali.Serie A side Lazio have made an enquiry regarding Atalanta stopper Cesare Natali.
The Rome side are looking to bolster their defence during the January transfer window, although Atalanta are not keen to sell a key member of their defence.
Atalanta are currently rooted at the bottom of the Italian top flight, six points off their nearest rivals, and need all their top players if they are to mount an unlikely bid for survival.
The 25-year-old has been a bright point in an otherwise disappointing season for the team from Bergamo, and even though Lazio are offering Italian international Paolo Negro in exchange, a deal looks unlikely until the summer.
"In the last few days Biancocelesti have asked us about Natali," confirmed Atalanta official Fabrizio Larini.
"But at this moment we cannot lose one of our key men, especially as there are no adequate alternatives. We are not interested in an exchange with Paolo Negro.
"In June we will allow Natali to follow his ambition and join a more prestigious club than Atalanta."
When the summer comes around the form of Natali may well have attracted other suitors, and Lazio could find themselves with unwanted competition for the player they would like to recruit immediately.
