Luca Siligardi's last-gasp free-kick earned Hellas Verona a brief stay of execution in Serie A as AC Milan were stunned 2-1 at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi on Monday.
Jeremy Menez's 21st-minute opener for Europa League-chasing Milan pushed Verona closer towards the relegation trapdoor but Giampaolo Pazzini sparked hope with a second-half penalty.
Basement boys Hellas continued turning the screw and got their reward when former Inter Milan midfielder Siligardi found the target with his left boot in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
It was to turn out to be a bitter sweet day for Verona as two hours later, 17th-placed Carpi beat Empoli 1-0 thanks to a late Kevin Lasagna goal, making it impossible for Luigi Delneri's side to achieve survival in the top flight.
Both teams had a man sent off at the Stadio Alberto Braglia. Levan Mchedlidze left Empoli a man light when he was dismissed in the first half and Lorenzo Lollo departed shortly after Lasagna's strike.
Earlier in the day, Juventus claimed a 32nd Serie A title after Roma beat Napoli 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.
A late goal from Radja Nainggolan saw Roma claim a narrow win, meaning Juventus are now an unassailable 12 points clear of second-placed Napoli with three games remaining in the season.
It is the Old Lady's fifth successive Serie A title, and the win sends third-placed Roma seven clear of Inter Milan in the race to secure a spot in next season's Champions League.
