The youngster returned from injury to cement a regular starting place for Ajax last term, with his performances catapulting him into the Holland squad for Euro 2004.
Heitinga performed with credit in Portugal, while earlier in the year Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti praised him following his efforts in the UEFA Champions League meeting between the two sides.
Juventus are said to be monitoring Heitinga's situation, but the signs are suggesting Milan will win the race should Ajax decide to sell.
Ajax may look to keep the youngster for another season, but Heitinga clearly feels he is ready for the move.
"Ajax have big traditions, and I like it there, but why shouldn't I feel ready for another league?" he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"There is nothing to say that at my age I must wait. I feel ready.
"The Italian league is tough, but I have no fear of facing new things.
"However, it does appear to me to be really difficult to come to Italy immediately
"Ajax are a great team but Milan are fantastic; who wouldn't like to play in Serie A?"
