Philippe Mexes has agreed a new one-year deal with AC Milan after his previous contract expired last week.
Mexes joined Milan from Roma in the summer of 2011 and has since made 81 appearances for the Rossoneri.
The 33-year-old started just 18 league games during the 2014-15 campaign and it was widely reported he would leave San Siro at the end of the season.
But the Frenchman has put pen to paper on a new contract which will see him spent another year at Milan.
"AC Milan announces that Philippe Mexes has extended his contract until June 30, 2016, and will be at Milanello on Saturday," a statement from the Serie A club read.
Milan are looking for a spark after enduring two disappointing campaigns.
The Rossoneri finished 10th in Serie A last season and will therefore miss out on European football once again having finished eighth the previous year.
Milan sacked coach Filippo Inzaghi last month and appointed former Sampdoria coach Sinisa Mihajlovic as his replacement.
They have strengthened their squad with the arrivals of Italy midfielder Andrea Bertolacci from Genoa and Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano from Shakhtar Donetsk.
Colombian forward Carlos Bacca has also joined Milan on a permanent transfer from Sevilla.
