Empoli may offer Balaban a lifeline

By Nadia Carminati
Empoli coach Attilio Perotti may offer Bosko Balaban a footballing lifeline after he was released from his contract by Aston Villa.

The Croatian forward must go down as one of the most expensive flops in recent times but the Serie A strugglers have invited the striker to train with them to see if he has what it takes to ensure their top-flight survival.

Speaking after his side's gut wrenching 1-0 defeat to Milan, Perotti said: "Balaban? He must arrive to train with us."

Villa have cut their losses on the 25-year-old, who has only represented the club's first team on eight occasions, never starting a Premiership game.
