Internazionale's lead at the top of Serie A was back to six points on Sunday after they claimed a 2-1 win over Palermo at The Giuseppe Meazza.
Second placed Roma claimed victory over Milan on Saturday to reduce Inter's lead to three - but the Nerazzuri restored their advantage.
Patrick Vieira opened the scoring for
Inter after just five minutes although
Palermo were level 20 minutes later when Marco Materazzi put through his own net.
The winner came 10 minutes before the break when Luis Jimenez struck.
The late game saw
Juventus cement their place in third with a 1-0 win over
Napoli at the Stadio Delle Apli.
The only goal of the game came with just two minutes left when Vincenzo Iaquinta struck.
Fiorentina moved four points clear of Milan in fourth as they beat
Genoa 3-1 in Florence.
It was a comfortable afternoon for the Viola with Mario Alberto Santana setting them on their way after 19 minutes and not long after their lead was doubled through Adrian Mutu (30).
Giampaolo Pazzini made it 3-0 before the hour which put the game beyond Genoa - who salvaged a late consolation through Matias Masiero (83).
Sampdoria moved into sixth and bolstered their hopes of a Uefa Cup place with a 3-1 win over
Catania.
All four goals in Genoa arrived in the last 22 minutes and it was Samp who took the lead through Angelo Palombo (68).
Catania levelled through Lorenzo Stovini (73) but it was just a matter of minutes before the home side recaptured the lead as Pietro Accardi (76) scored and then with four minutes left they made sure of the three points thanks to Claudio Bellucci's strike.
At the bottom, the relegation battle took a fresh twist as
Reggina moved to within just a point of safety after a terrific win over
Siena.
The Tuscan outfit put up little resistance as Reggina found themselves 3-0 up at the break with Franco Brienza (9 & 38) and Francesco Cozza (19) netting.
Simone Missiroli (68) completed the scoring and Reggina climbed to third from bottom - above Empoli and to within touching distance of Catania, Parma and Livorno.
Empoli indeed dropped to second from bottom as they went down to a miserable 4-1 loss at
Atalanta.
The home side were 2-0 up within the opening half-hour thanks to Antonio Langella (19) and Cristiano Doni (27).
After the break Simone Padoin's brace (78 & 84) sandwiched Empoli's solitary response from Ighli Vannucchi.
Parma and
Livorno find themselves entrenched in trouble after they played out a 1-1 draw which does neither of them much good.
Vidigal had put Livorno ahead just before the break but Reginaldo Ferreira grabbed the equaliser on the hour.
Finally, bottom of the table
Cagliari still maintain a slight hope of staying up after they beat
Torino 3-0 in Sardinia.
Jeda opened the scoring on 11 minutes before Robert Acquafresca (22 pen) doubled their advantage, which came just moments after David Di Michele had missed a spot-kick for the visitors.
The win was sealed by Acquafresca just before the hour and they now are eight points off safety, while the three points deducted at the start of the season look as if they could be very costly.
