Palermo star Carvalho Amauri could be out for up to four months due to injury.
Palermo's hopes of sustaining a strong challenge in the New Year have been hit by the news that star striker Carvalho Amauri has suffered knee ligament damage.
The Brazilian-born striker suffered the serious injury in a collision with Siena keeper Alex Manninger on Saturday, and subsequent scans confirmed the ligament damage to his right knee.
Amauri has top-scored for Palermo this season with eight goals but could now be ruled out for up to four months following the blow.
Palermo's medical staff will send their star man for more checks before deciding whether surgery is necessary.
The loss of Amauri for much of what remains of the season is a bitter pill to swallow for Serie A's third-placed side, but the striker is hopeful his team-mates can keep up the challenge for a UEFA Champions League finish until his return.
"I'm really sorry to leave the team at this moment, but I'm sure my team-mates will do really good things without me," Amauri told the club's official website.
"I hope to be able to come back soon to give my help to this fantastic group."
