Gomes inflicted this latest bombshell after the Italians lost 1-0 to his former club in his home capital of Lisbon. On his return, Gomes was given a raptuous welcome from the home fans and he is now hopes to move back home to Portugal.
The talented forward came to prominance in Euro' 2000 where he played a starring role in Portugal's successful venture to the semi-finals and very nearly moved closer to his homeland with a move to French giants Paris St Germain but the deal collapsed .
Gomes has been quoted saying, "I have only been away for a year but i'm homesick. I am with Fiorentina now but things can change at any moment". He added that if a Portugese club came in for him he would waste no time in moving in that direction. He declared "I'm Portugese and I miss my country".
Gomes' words are set to spark a rush to sign the 24 year-old, with the leading Portugese sides likely to be in the frame. Fiorentina are likely to allow their forward to leave at a price, considering their financial situation.
