Striker surprised by reports he is retiring from Romania duty

Adrian Mutu has dismissed suggestions that he is contemplating international retirement. Reports in Romania had claimed the Fiorentina forward had been unhappy with quotes made by national boss Victor Piturca. Mutu was forced to sit out his country's 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat against Lithuania last Saturday, with Piturca claiming afterwards that his star man would have been unable to affect the result. The comment was believed to have riled Mutu, but the 29-year-old has emphatically denied that he is considering turning his back on his nation as a result. "Honestly I was very surprised to read that I was angry with the coach and wanted to quit the national side," he said. "I can guarantee that I have never said anything like that and I'm absolutely not thinking about it. I haven't argued with Piturca."
