Marcello Lippi has confirmed Aimo Diana will join Christian Vieri in missing the World Cup.
Italy coach Marcello Lippi has confirmed Aimo Diana will join Christian Vieri in missing the World Cup finals.
Vieri has been ruled out of next month's tournament in Germany with a knee injury, while Diana is absent due to a groin complaint.
Experienced striker Vieri has not played for over a month after hurting his knee during Monaco's game against Paris Saint Germain in March.
He requires an operation to repair the damage and his absence will be a blow to Italy, as he has scored nine goals in previous World Cup finals.
Also out of Lippi's plans for the competition is Sampdoria defender Diana, with the Azzurri coach admitting the duo will not be fit for selection.
"I have very clear ideas about my squad and a few injuries have contributed to clarifying the position," Lippi told ANSA news agency.
"Vieri has had an operation on his knee and won't be available while Diana has a serious groin injury that won't be right in time and so he won't be able to be called up."
Cristiano Lucarelli or Vincenzo Iaquinta could take Vieri's place in the squad, while Massimo Oddo could be the beneficiary of Diana's injury.
