League leaders Internazionale kept up their relentless pursuit of the Serie A title with a 5-2 win over Catania on their travels, while closest challengers Roma were equally emphatic in beating Reggina 3-0 on home soil.
Roberto Mancini's Inter broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time through Argentine defender Walter Samuel, before Santiago Solari and Fabio Grosso put them in cruise control.
Catania's Gionatha Spinesi and Giorgio Corona gave the scoreline a hint of respectability but Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Julio Cruz ensured Inter travelled home with a comfortable victory.
Roma failed to break Reggina down in a closely fought first half but had enough in the second 45 minutes as Francesco Tavano, Philippe Mexes and Christian Panucci, in the final minute, secured an impressive three-point haul
Milan moved to within a point of a UEFA Champions League place thanks to a last minute goal from Massimo Ambrosini in a 1-0 win at home to Sampdoria.
The Rossoneri had been reduced to ten men after just ten minutes when Massimo Oddo was dismissed for a professional foul, but before half time Samp also had Ruben Olivera sent off for two bookable offences.
Adrian Mutu in the first half and Luca Toni in the second did the damage for Fiorentina against Empoli, while Lazio were also 2-0 winners, on their travels, as Cagliari were put to the sword.
Sanchez Cribari scored Lazio's opener in the 21st minute, before Tommas Rocchi made sure of the points ten minutes before the break as the Biancocelesti moved into fourth place.
Edgar Reyes netted a last minute winner as Messina beat Siena 1-0, while Livorno and Ascoli could not be separated in a 0-0 stalemate.
Udinese and Parma shared the points after a dramatic 3-3 draw at Stadio Friuli.
Claudio Ranieri's Parma saw goals from Igor Budan (8) and Francesco Parravicini (78) sandwich two strikes from Antonio Di Natale (42, 68 pen) before an action-packed last ten minutes.
Christian Obodo gave Udinese the lead on 84 minutes, but two minutes later on-loan Manchester United forward Giuseppe Rossi netted from the penalty spot to give struggling Parma a point.
