Schalke head coach Andre Breitenreiter will leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season.

The decision was confirmed by both parties before their final match at Hoffenheim.

"It's my final match on the bench with Schalke," Breitenreiter told Sky Deutschland on Saturday after just a season in charge.

"Christian Heidel called me earlier this week to tell me that I won't be Schalke's coach next season and that I am not part of his plans."

His contract still had one year left to run with it due to expire in June 2017. However, the 42-year-old's stay was ended early due to his failure to secure Champions League football.

They were also knocked out of the Europa League at the round of 32 this season after suffering a 3-0 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Schalke have qualified for the Europa League next term, but Breitenreiter won't be able to oversee their European campaign and there will now be a 10th boss in a decade at the helm in Gelsenkirchen.
