Magath wants to wait to see which competition Schalke qualify for

Schalke coach Felix Magath insists there is no rush to enter into talks regarding a new contract for Kevin Kuranyi. The striker's current deal expires at the end of the season and he has been heavily linked with a move to Italian giants Juventus in recent weeks. Sunderland showed an interest during the January transfer window and Kuranyi has previously stated he is happy to wait to discuss a new deal at Schalke. Magath also feels it is prudent to leave negotiations regarding an extension until the season's end when Schalke will know if they are playing in European competition next term. "Kevin is in very good shape, but it is actually not the right moment to talk to players," Magath told Deutsche Presseagentur. "This moment will only be there if we have the knowledge of whether we are going to participate in a European club competition next season. "And then, still, in which competition we would be playing in." Meanwhile, Schalke youngster Joel Matip has signed a new contract to stay with the Bundesliga club until 2013. Matip, who made his Cameroon debut as a substitute in Wednesday's 0-0 draw with Italy, has been involved in Magath's first-team plans this season.
