Freiburg captain Heiko Butscher has ended the uncertainty surrounding his future by signing a two-year contract extension at Badenova Stadion.
The defender is now tied to the Bundesliga club, who are competing for at least a top-six finish this season and a place in Europe, until June 2013.
It emerged last week that Butscher had turned down an initial offer from Freiburg, with his previous deal having been set to expire this summer.
But the 29-year-old has now been persuaded to follow team-mate Stefan Reisinger in signing and he believes that the club are moving in the right direction.
Butscher told Freiburg's official website: "I am very happy about the deal. I am enjoying my spell at the club and I like the city.
"I am convinced the club will have a steady development in the years to come."
Butscher's contract extension has also come as a relief to Freiburg general manager Dirk Dufner.
He said: "Heiko Butscher is a role-model professional for our club.
"He is not just a key figure in our defence, he also does a lot of things for the team off the field.
"Heiko came to us for these negotiations. We have resolved everything behind closed doors as there was no need for a public audience."
