But contract will not be valid if relegation becomes reality
Cologne have announced that goalkeeper Michael Rensing has signed a two-year contract extension, which will become active if the club avoids Bundesliga relegation.
The former Bayern Munich and Germany Under-21 player moved to the RheinEnergieStadion as a free agent in January on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
He is now committed until June 2013, but if Cologne, who sit 11th in the German top flight and just four points clear of the relegation play-off position, fail to avoid the drop, the deal will not be valid.
Rensing told Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper: "I have signed a new contract because I think we have a good chance to make progress into the right direction.
"The club deserves to be back in the spotlights of the Bundesliga."
Cologne general manager Volker Finke said: "We are delighted to have signed a new deal with Michael Rensing.
"He joined us in January and he has become a vital first-team player in the past few months."
